Are You Focusing On the Wrong Things When You Sing?

Singing for Multitaskers

Are you a multitasker like me? Do you have a million and one things you want to accomplish at the same time?

The problem with multitasking is that our attention gets scattered.

You know, it’s like when you walk into a room and think, “Wait, why did I come in here?” (Please tell me I’m not the only one this happens to!)

I’m a firm believer that our vocal habits are highly influenced by our everyday habits.

So if we are a do-er and we like to tackle many things at once (🙋🏻‍♀️ ), then chances are when we sing, we think things like…

“That note needs to be better, this part was shaky, I think I’m straining here, I sound flat there, etc, etc”.

One of the most important lessons I’ve learnt in my career as a singer and vocal coach is that we can’t fix ALL the problems we think we have in our voices at the same time.

If we try to do that, we end up focusing on all the wrong things and feeling frustrated.

This is what this week’s vocal tip is all about.

In this quick tip video, you’ll learn…

  • Why being singular in your focus is the best strategy for making real progress in your singing
  • Why trying too hard can backfire and slow your progress down.
  • Three examples of how you might be focusing on the wrong things
  • Three solutions for what to do instead if you are focusing on the wrong things
  • How to enjoy and look forward to practicing on a regular basis so that you can build great vocal habits!
